In today’s spotlight is Team CARER404 from the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), who won the Special Mention: Community Impact Award for their app, Caring for Persons with Special Needs. It is a resource toolkit that provides caregivers of individuals with special needs easy access to vital resources and support. The platform consolidates critical resources and offers caregivers quick, personalised access to support, allowing them to make informed decisions promptly. By alleviating the stress of finding and using the right resources, the app significantly improves the quality of life for both caregivers and their dependents. For filling an overlooked need, the app was a resounding choice for the Community Impact Award.

We spoke with the team to peel back on what their Challenge experience was like.

Please introduce yourselves.

We are from MINDSG Ltd, specifically the Caregiver Support Services team. MINDSG is a social service agency that works with persons with special needs, providing support to them and their caregivers. Our team name, CARER404, was inspired by the 404 error code, which typically means a webpage couldn't be found. However, we saw this as a call to action—to ensure that caregivers in our community can easily find the resources and knowledge they need without hitting any roadblocks. The name reflects our mission to address this gap and make resources more accessible.

How did you feel when you found out you had won the competition?

We were incredibly surprised and overjoyed to learn that we had won. It’s an honour to receive this recognition from the organisers and it really validates the effort we’ve put into this project. Winning the special award has motivated our team to push forward in developing the AI toolkit further. It reinforces our belief that this solution has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of caregivers in our community.

Tell us about your winning solution. What were your motivations behind it?

Our winning solution is a platform designed to make it easier for caregivers to find and access resources through an AI toolkit. The idea came from a realisation that many caregivers struggle to find the information and support they need online. For caregivers of individuals with special needs, navigating through various platforms to locate reliable and relevant resources can be overwhelming and time-consuming.

With this app, we aim to consolidate all the caregiver-related resources available in Singapore into one accessible platform. By leveraging AI, we hope to provide caregivers with tailored recommendations and a streamlined way to connect with the knowledge and support they need. Our motivation is simple: to empower caregivers and ensure they never feel alone in their journey.

What were some challenges you faced while crafting your solution?

One of the biggest challenges we faced was setting up the prompts and rules for the AI within just one day. We wanted to ensure that the AI would be able to help caregivers by directing them to the right resources and answering their questions accurately. At the same time, it was crucial to establish rules to prevent the AI from providing unnecessary or irrelevant answers. It was a demanding process, and we had to work quickly and collaboratively to fine-tune the system in such a short timeframe. Despite the challenges, our team gave it our best, and we’re proud of what we achieved.

What are your next steps after winning this challenge?

Winning this challenge has given us the confidence to take the next step in developing our solution further. Our immediate plan is to deepen the functionality of the AI toolkit we created. We want to refine and enhance the platform, then trial it with caregivers to see how effective it is in meeting their needs. Feedback from caregivers will be crucial in guiding our improvements as we work towards making this a valuable resource for the community.

What advice would you give to future participants looking to join this or similar challenges?

Our advice is simple: just try it out! Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and explore creative ideas. AI has the potential to do so many things that we might not even have imagined at first. Embrace the learning process, experiment, and be open to discovering what’s possible. Even if it seems daunting, the experience itself is incredibly rewarding.

What are your thoughts on the Capabara platform after using it?

We found the Capabara platform to be incredibly user-friendly, especially for those who may not have prior experience in designing apps. With AI support, it becomes as simple as using keywords and prompts to create and customise everything.

Beyond just app development, we see a lot of potential for the platform in other areas of work. For example, it could be used to analyse databases, streamline processes, and even enhance internal workflows. Its versatility makes it a valuable tool, not only for providing resources to caregivers but also for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our team’s operations.
