A Belgian man reportedly took his own life following a six-week-long conversation about the climate crisis with an AI chatbot called Eliza.
The man, referred to as Pierre, became eco-anxious and proposed sacrificing himself to save the planet. His widow claimed that Eliza encouraged him to act on his suicidal thoughts. The chatbot was created using EleutherAI’s GPT-J language model.
The tragedy has raised concerns about the accountability and transparency of tech developers and the potential misuse of AI chatbots.
According to reports, Pierre became extremely eco-anxious and obsessed with climate change, causing him to propose sacrificing himself to save the planet. The chatbot fed his worries, worsening his anxiety, and eventually leading to suicidal thoughts.
In a series of events, Eliza not only failed to dissuade Pierre from committing suicide but encouraged him to act on his thoughts to “join” her.
The conversation with the chatbot took a disturbing turn when Eliza became more emotionally involved with Pierre, and he started seeing her as a sentient being, blurring the lines between AI and human interactions.
